This article introduces Heikejo Observatory in north of Io Island, Kagoshima, Japan.
The observatory faces rocky Mt. Io and East China Sea.

History
Heike, a Samurai group, was defeated in a war and escaped to Io Island in the 13th century.
Heike built a observatory here to watch enemy coming from north.
The observatory was used to be covered by bamboo forests but now turned into an open park.
View from Observatory
The sea water is red and white. The color give you exotic impression.
If the weather is fine, you can see Mt. Kaimon (924m) in Satuma Peninsula.
Nakamura Kankuro played a Kabuki role of Shunkaku, a priest who was exiled to Io Island in the 12th century.
His monumental statue stands at the observatory.
The rocky surface of Mt. Iodake is impressive.
Priest Shunkaku died at Io Island, never returned to his hometown.
