Access & Parking Lot
It takes about 1.5 hours from Kagoshima Airport or Kagoshima City.
In winter plum trees are beautiful.
There is a wide parking lot for about 100 cars.
There are beautiful plum trees and shops in winter.
Umegaya mochi (rice cake) is sold at the shrine which worships academic God “Sugawara Michizane”.

The shrine worships the God of hunting.
Shrine God and History
Fujikawa Tenjin Shrine worships Sugawara Michizane, or the God of Academy.
He was a scholar of the 10th century and was the minister of the government.
But he was defeated in a political struggle and transferred to Fukuoka.
He died in Fukuoka, never to return to Kyoto.
After his death many calamities occured in Kyoto and people said those calamities were due to his curse.
There is another history at this Fujikawa Tenjin Shrine.
After he was transferred to Fukuoka, he escaped this place to escape from assasins.
There is his tomb in the garden of the shrine.

Beautiful Plum Trees
Plum trees are beautiful from February to March at the shrine.
February is the exam seasons and many young people come to the shrine to pray for passing exams.
There are as many as 150 plum trees in the garden.
It is said that Sugawara Michizane planted the plum trees.
White Boars
There are 3 white boars at the shrine.
White boars are very rare and white is the good color of luck.
