Volcano Sakurajima’s Historical Eruption in 1914

This post is also available in: 日本語

Eruption in June

The eruption smoke reached 2,200m.
The wind blows to southeast (Kanoya City).

It is very nice weather. I cannot believe that the rainy season arrived in Kagoshima the day before yesterday.
It is the shame that I have to stay at the office despite of the lovely weather.

Half-buried Shrine Gate at Sakurajima

The shrine gate is located at the northeast of Sakurajima.

Massive eruption took place in 1914. The eruption buried the gate with volcanic ash. You will be amazed at the large scale of eruption.

101 years have passed since the eruption. The big tree (sea fig) tells you the long elapse of time after the eruption in 1914.

I think that it was a wise decision to left the buried gate at it was so that later generations can feel the scale of the eruption.

Recently Japanese volcanoes have got very active recently. I think that we have to increase our alerts on volcanic calamities.

Influence of Eruption in 1914

The eruption killed as many as 64 people. Much lava connected Sakurajima with the Osumi Peninsula.

Much amount of ash fell on Sakurajima (Thickness was about 1.5m). Two-third of islanders moved from Sakurajima to other places.

There is dormant volcano Mt.Kaimon in my hometown, Ibusuki City. What would happen if the volcano erupts and bury my home? …I don’t to want to think about it.

In order to recover from the volcanic calamities of Sakurajima, the ferry started to commute between Kagoshima City and Sakurajima. Thanks to the ferry, many tourist visit Sakurajima every year.

Following video shows you Sakurajima ferry.

Summary

・Sakurajima made biggest eruption in 1914.

・Please make a visit to Kurokami Shrine Gate if you want to know about the large scale of eruption. (It is convenient to come by car, but you can also take a bus)

・Sakurajima is called “island”, but actually it has been connected to the Kyushu after the eruption in 1914.
